crowded buses , trains , bazars, hospitals,
stations , roads etc etc. i am very
happy to be here as one of them, atleast
morally I am right that I have not fled the
Country after sucking states economy.

Mr. Common man,
I have some questions for you. You said first go to the needy people,feel for them and then contribute money direcly. Where do you usually go to help them? How you help them? Are you a social worker?
I am asking because my maid is in great trouble and I want to help her. She is very nice person but always looks upset. I contacted few organizations but did not get much response. If you are able to help in this matter, I shall explain you her problem.

Hi to all ,
There is lot of talk going on this subject about NGO , social service etc,etc. I would like to
add some points here , I have seen here in
calcutta in different Places lot of young people
specially students come from abroad for social service which may be just to help the kids in their study, or helping aged people , Majority of them are non indian, they have heard india only through books , pictures etc.
I have hosted couple of them in my house.
I never ever seen ani NRI bengali sending their
kids to their roots (read calcutta ) do some
sort of Social Service to know their origin.
I dont know why . is it the fear that their
origin will be exposed to their kids.
Can anybody answer ?

Hi Debasish,
actually Indian parents are too much protective about their kids.it is our social set-up and I don't think it can be changed so easily. to be honest most of the NRIs hardly have any feelings for India, they themselves do not want to go to India frequently, then why they would send their kids here. I had been in USA for 9 years. ami ekbar kolkatay aschilam, Damdam airport-e namar pare ek Bangalee bole utlo, eto garam ekhane, airport-er ki abastha...na elei bhalo hoto.
So yes, it might be the fear that their origin will be exposed to their kids.

I think you are right konika. I will be
hosting another girl next month , she is
from sweden just young as 19 years. she
will commute every morning from my
place in jadavpur to Donbosco Ashralya in
howrah to do some volunteer work , I explained
him about the distance and bus journey in
calcutta , how difficult it is. but she is adamant. I am feeling happy that I may not
be doing something for my city but hosting
somebody who is doing work for the poor people
of my city. I will be glad to host any such
people who are willing to work for city's
underprevileged . You are actually right saying
so that we are too much protective about
our kids whether in country or verseas.

So when people outside India come to our place with the mission of help, what type of volunteer work they do? How long they stay there? Is it possible for a 19 - years old girl to provide enough money for those needy people? ( She must be a student ). Please tell me more about your experience in this regard. See, it is true that I don't visit the villages and work for poor people but I am always very much concerned about my maids (not only my maids, my neighbours' maids also)....their family problems...the financial crisis they go through... They know it and always come to me when they need money. Several times I have been cheated and gone through some bad experiences. I don't think monetary help always works. I try to solve their problems but don't know how.

It is not monetary help at all. I belive
monetary does not give a long time solution
either. instead the help should be building
up the children , helping their education, health, and there are plenty factors which
affects our society in cities and villages.
this girl or other students who comes they
are from very middle class background, they
accumulate funds from their odd jobs , little
grant from their own government etc. she is
a student and also a part time worker.
she will be helping deiable people, children
eductaion etc. once she comes i may be in
a position to give you more on this.

Being a bengali , I love all bengalis and always want to help for our upliftment in education and health. It is this spirit which will enlighten us as a strong community once again.It is not money , it is our attitude that really matters.Realise the change by giving up your negative habbits.Reciprocate it to our juniors.let us fight together .....step by step...if u really want to make progress to our comminity as a whole , give stress to basics , ie,....food , health , primary education to all....
If everybody quit smoking in westbengal and that money be used for such noble cause , i think and believe we will be on our mission.

a very nice thought indeed. but what could be the steps? u have talked about giving up negative habits... my experience is that after certain age people can not change themselves unless they realize that they should change. talking about basic needs....yes we all know situation should be improved but how? we can raise fund, provide necessary money, clothes etc., many rural areas now have primary schools, many of our friends carry all the expenses of their maids' kids' education, also they help them in study. but i don't think situation has changed. most of those kids are still in the same place where their parents are. it is really difficult to change the attitude of the people, their mental set-up, the whole infrastructure...isn't it?

Hi Konika,
Indeed it is a difficult task to make a change in the attitude but don’t forget that we are thinking of a huge task in which everybody has to put some effort ,believe me it is not a job for some of us. Start from grass root level; taking up with schools , were our future grows up . Can’t we do something to make them visualize their role and teach them more of our culture and traditions side by side. Let me ask help from some volunteers ( teachers ) for these noble cause. Give some time ( a fort night ) of yours to go deep in gram bangla and spend time with the children’s. Let them understand there is something to do better and there is somebody to support them too.
From every university, we expect from the youths to do something in this regard.
I have confidence they will ……
Poets, singers & writers has much role to play to convey to the mass , Let me request their creative approach in spreading the feelings of bangla as the supreme.
Isn’t it true that we feel proud when we talk of Sourav , the Bengal Tiger in Cricket. We want more heroes in every field. They are and will be the source of inspirations to all of us.
Let us start something……it is the right time now.

what u are saying is not possible unless we join or form some organization...as u said it is not a job of some of us. but how to pull people? everyone is so busy now-a-days. yes, university students might work seriously...but how long? once they get a good job they will leave the place. I am sorry being so pessimistic...I don't want to be...I really want to do something...but I don't know that being a working mother of a 9-years old kid, how much time I could spend... still I am with u.

You are all too generalising the people,
look as a whole, not an individual maid
or university student. If your heart
into it ,it does not matter whether you
are in job , university student or
working mother with a kid, there is
always a scope for doing something
for other people .
Shagar , I really appreciate you attitude
about bengal and bengali , but surprisingly
in today's west bengal literate bengalees
Specially in Cities does not feel pride
to talk in their own language its not
so in other indian states. Very recently
I was in a Art museum in Manchester City,
Where the title of every single paintings
were writeen in english and bangla (because
of bengali is the one of the official language
of Lancashire city council , its credit goes
ethnic bengalees read bangladeshis ). where
as wehere I stay in Calcutta ,98 percent are
ethnic bengaless though house names ( Nice
Bengalee name )are written in english.
So the moral is till the time we feel proud about ourculture and language we will continue
to Write " Paromita Weds Shyamal ".

of the way of the topic but I felt to write.

Development of West Bengal and its people, if that is our mission then I don’t think you have to go anywhere because you have much to do at home for your son and perhaps little bit in your neighbors. It would be much better if you can give some time to sit with the children around you and make them do small creative things. Motivate them so that they have some dreams in life. It is not only engineers and doctors ……..there are more options.
You may be having many friends, how about their thinking ? Inspire them to do small things around them….. if not great.
Remember, wherever you are or whatever you are there is something to do …..

really a nice mail. some of my friends(not many though) are doing something which is really appreciable. I have got involved in someone's problem so intensively that my friends are saying I'll be in trouble. we have our own way to help and do something for our people. the main thing is how much devotion u have in your mind. but again this type of individual effort is not enough for the development of a state. we need something else.

Do anything you like madam anywhere in india i will be personally pleased, do not come ot WB for heaven sake. Industrialist fear to come in WB, hope you know the reasons. Read the papers you will get a better picture. I give you a simple instance! Haldia petro chemical is known to all of us. It was constructed in good faith by Sir purnendu chatterjee, today it is meeting its doom. I won't give the reasons. I feel ashamed to say the reasons behind for that was a 100 crore project! Whatever, please go through the papers before you enter this HELL, West Bengal.
